Position of Herzegovina under the Turkish Rule Štampaj E-pošta

As Turks were not hard-working people (they did not have working habits), but primarily soldiers (with “the gene” of warriors, conquerors and plunderers), they used the people from conquered countries and made them farmers by settling them on newly conquered territories. In Eastern Herzegovina Region there were not such migrations.

With this period begins a division of people into different religions and nations. Namely, a new nation “Bosniaks” is mentioned for the first time, by Benjamin Kalaj. But the Serbs, the Croats and other two constitutional nations did not accept this. At that time, the power in Bosnia and Herzegovina was autocratic. Ordinary people couldn’t have any influence on running the country. Austro-Hungarian Empire considered Bosnia and Herzegovina as its colony. Because of hard life and pressures, Serbs and Muslims emigrated from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was annexed completely in 1908. This irritated the Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina very much. There followed an attempt on the life of heir-apparent Franja Ferdinand, committed by Gavrilo Princip. Members of “Young Bosnia” Organisation were people of all three nations and they fought for “Yugoslav” ideas. Hard times came for the Serbs.
During the First World War, in Trebinje itself (which was the centre of Travunia Parish), 82 innocent Serbs were hanged. Similar crimes happened in Bileca Canton, too. Houses were burnt, the Serbs were held as hostages, their property was abducted. These crimes were committed by the “shuckors”, Muslim and Croatian soldiers recruited by Austria. The First World War ended in 1918 with total score of 1, 5 million dead Serbs.

stb_staro_trebinje_3.jpgThe toponym Trebinje comes from a medieval term Travunia. Trebinje was built by the Slavs, probably on the site of a Roman town laid waste by the Saracens in 840. In the mid-10th century Konstantin Porfirogenit mentioned it under the name of Terbunia. It commanded the road from Ragusa to Constantinople, traversed, in 1096, by Raymond of Toulouse and his crusaders.
