Duži Monastery

This monastery is situated ten kilometers south-west from the town of Trebinje, in the area called Trebinje's wood. It is only a few kilometers from Tvrdos Monastery. There are no evidences when the monastery was founded. In 17^th century, there used to live shepherds who took care of the cattle belonging to Tvrdos Monastery. They prayed to god in a small cottage-like church covered by straw. After Tvrdos Monastery was torn down, a few monks moved here. Duzi Monastery was the centre of the First Herzegovina Uprising in 1857. But the following year the Turks conquered the monastery, and the monks moved to Montenegro. The following year they returned to the monastery. It is known that Princess Tatiana Vasiljickova donated a big church bell to the monastery, which could be heard even in Trebinje itself. This made Turks from the town of Trebinje very angry. If you visit Duzi Monastery, you may hear a legend about a Greek who didn't believe in God. He sought the God by his reason, not by his heart. Once he met a boy at the seaside pouring sea water from one egg shell to another. When he asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied that he wanted to place all sea water into an egg shell. Then the Greek told him that it was impossible, but the boy responded that it was impossible to place the God in one's head, too.
